Would Punisment Changes or Prevents Cheating?

Academic cheating nowadays becomes a serious problem in every level of education. It attracts people to give opinions about. While some people agree with the academic cheating as common thing in world of education, other said disagree. They might think that the academic cheating is common, but I say it is as a serious problem which should be solve. For me, punish the academic cheaters strictly is a best solution so far. School authority must be strengthen up. Similarly Cotton states that Schools should also allow secondary students to think and to develop problem-solving skills, including rationales that lead to their conclusions, consideration of other points of view, and analysis of various reasoning processes (Cotton, 1997, p. 6).

Most of students cheat because of behavior in their environment they’re study. Giving punishment will change their perspective about cheating. Some students cheat in some case just to follow the other students. Finally, once students have learned the skill, they are taught them when it is appropriate to use each skill – meta-cognition (Candace Davies 2011). The punishment may freak them out and slowly but sure, it will changes their mentality about the academic cheating and help them to think critically. Learning to think critically is conceptualized as the acquisition of the competence to participate critically in the communities and social practices of which a person is a member of (Geert Ten Dam Monique Volman 2004). Attitude changing is first step for behavior change.

The punishment also may become a warning for the other students, so they will not dare to cheating. When a student got punishment, she or he becomes an example for the others and the others would aware off also think twice before doing the cheating. The other students said if they did the cheating because they cannot remmember or forgot to know background knowledge. Originally developed by Tulving (1985), the Remember–Know paradigm describes two main types of retrieval response, Remember versus Know. By contrast, knowledge which is Known is recalled, retrieved and applied without any such additional contextual associations and ‘‘thus, is information which is simply based on a certainsense of just knowing or familiarity [. . .].’’ (Noyes & Garland, 2003, p. 415) One important implication is that the Remember type of memory is thus more vulnerable to fading with time, than knowledge which is Known.

While some people think that the cheating occurs in every aspect of life like education, economy, social and etc. So, it is not big deal, cause it happens around us. They said to get used with it more alike accept it as behavior or even worse as culture. I have different mind about it then. Claim bad thing as behavior or culture is absolutely wrong. If there something wrong around us, then we have to fix it or solve it. To change behavior, we must change the mentality, habbits and perpectives. The punishment for the academic cheating is one of many ways to fix or solve the wrong things which occured around us.

It does not matter if the academic cheating is common problem nor serious problem. It is still problem and need to be fixed up. The punishment may be the solution so far. It is not just to punish the cheaters, also be the warning for the other cheaters and it means a prevented action. The students should consider again about the punishment and the teachers should select which kind of the punishment that should be used. So, it will not hurt the student’s mentality to deeper and create a traumatic. In term to break the chains, cutting action is needed, to stop it, still that the punishment is the best one so far.

Is Character Education Essential in Our Education System?

Moral deficiency has become a serious issue all over the world and it is also a big problem in Indonesia. Indonesia Government released the newest Law No.20 Year 2003 on Indonesia National Education System regarding Indonesia characters and education institutions responsibility to incorporate character education. Character education according to the Education Ministry of Indonesia is a conscious effort to make students understand, care about, and internalize the values and norms of the social life, in order to create a better personality. There are arguments whether our educational system also needs to focus on the development of students’ morality as much as it focuses on students’ academic achievements. Given the problem of moral deficiency has become a world concern, character building is critical to be instilled in the curriculum for several reasons.
The first reason that character building is needed to be included in National Education system is because Indonesia has to breed not only intelligent but also morally responsible students. In order to take our country forward, one of the things we have to focus on is the next generation, the youth. Therefore, the system of our education is very important. Essentially, education is a tool to bring forth competent human resources with good moral. Character education is able to develop students’ citizenship. Morally responsible citizens are more likely to bring our country forward than the selfish citizens who only want the gaining for themselves. Without character education, students will not see the importance of good characters which has been disregarded by our education system.
The second reason that moral education is highly critical is many people have higher education, but lack in moral. For example, those corruptors in our country are the majority of people who have postgraduate degree or even doctorate degree. Based on Indonesia Corruption Eradication Commission or KPK (Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi) statistic, more than six hundred people who have been detained for corruption are postgraduates, two hundred more are graduates, and forty of them are doctorates. They are intelligent people, but those titles do not prevent them from violating the less fortunate’s rights and robbing our country money. This is a prove that intelligence is not equal with goodness. It seems many people have lost their value of honesty. Therefore, character education is not optional, but it is highly needed to restore that value.
The third reason that character education is required because good attitude is more valuable than a smart brain. Up until curriculum 2013, our education system mainly focuses on students’ academic achievements instead of the learning process itself. The main concern is only in the form of a score and the learning process is regarded as unimportant. This has been encouraging students to value the score of their academic achievement above anything. We certainly have to change this fatal misconception. The students’ way of thinking that has them only care about their score is needed to be changed. In order to be a better people whether for the society or for themselves, the students have to learn the values and the norms of the social life and instill them in their lives. Therefore, moral education is needed to be re-implemented in our education system. The character education implementation is able to facilitate students to develop good characters and basic human values.
The last reason to implement character education is the youth have to be taught good characters and basic human values as early as possible. We cannot just wait for the next generation to be mature enough to start learning those values. Good character is not only something to be learned about, but it needs many efforts to be internalized in the youth. Moral values that have been taught in the early age will be more likely to leave an imprint in the youth until they become an adult. In this era when full-day school is a common thing, children spend more time in their schools rather than in their home. This is a chance that we can take advantage of to teach the children those good values through the national education system. With character education as a part of the national curriculum, nation’s characters and education institutions have no choice, but to incorporate is as part of their learning and teaching program. Students will be exposed more on the chance to learn and exercise the values, which are honesty, responsibility, respect, caring, and citizenship.
Many may believe character education is not needed in our education system. The youth can learn our culture value and norm outside school. However, the effort of instilling good characters and basic human value is not only the family’s responsibility. It is our responsibility together, including the government and the social environment. The youth does not only have to learn those values, but also practice them in real life. They need the role models as much as they the teacher to teach them those values. Character education as part o the national education system will able to facilitate not only the teacher, but also the parents to teach the children the good values.
The others also believe that character education is not as important as the education itself. However, the problem of moral deficiency and destructive behavior of the nowadays generation have proved otherwise. The phenomenon of social demoralization and social unrest happen in almost all sectors of life in Indonesia. The importance of character education is cannot be stressed enough. Sojourner asserted that it is no doubt true that even for the American educational system was originally focused just as much or more on the development of students’ morality, virtue and citizenship as it was on improving student acumen in reading, writing and arithmetic. Character education is even as old as the education itself. Essentially, education cannot be separated from moral education.
In conclusion, character education is greatly substantial in our education system. It may be the answer to nowadays issue of moral deficiency in our society. Even though it has its own challenges to be implemented, character education is inevitable. The responsibility of character education is not only on the family, but also on the government and the societal environment. Therefore, the national education system, which has a big role in moving forward our county, needs character education as part of our effort to bring forth human resources who are not only intelligently competent, but also morally responsible.

Phenomenon of ‘Omteloletom’ Has Many Disadvantages Than Advantages

Recently, words ‘omteloletom’ has been very famous in indonesia, even in the world wide. According to Wulandari in pikir-rakyat.com (2016) stated that hashtag ‘omteloletom’ exists on world trending topic on december 21th 2016, because be sides Indonesia other coutries also use the hashtag even famous celebrities in the world. It happened because ‘omteloletom’ is being famous in Indonesia, because social media in Indonesia there are many videos and pictures of meme about ‘omteloletom.’ The ‘omteloletom’ is an activity which someone or a group ask to bus driver to ring klaxon that sound ‘telolet’ with screming “om telolet om” and  holding up a written paper “om telolet om.” When the bus driver is ring the klaxon, they scream excitedly like getting a prize. The phenomenon of ‘omteloletom’ should not be overstated. In fact, ‘omteloletom’ has many negative effects for Indonesia based on some reasons below.
People assumed that ‘omteloletom’ phenomenon is something new and funny. In fact the phenomenon is not new, according to Hakim in googleweblight.com (2016) that the klaxon has existed for many years even since a decade ago. It proves that the sound of the klaxon is not new. Then, for the phenomena is not new also, according to Patra as a bus driver in regional.kompas.com (2016) that the phenomenon has existed since 6 years ago. So that, the phenomenon is not new and a habit of people exactly for children around a place which has bus with the klaxon. Then, people assumed that is a fun, but some people can not find the fun, even many people ask about where the humor and pleasure of ‘omteloletom.’ Logically, I can not figure out where the fun of it, becuase when asking the klaxon and hearing the ‘telolet’ I can recognize the fun, but if I am a child maybe I can find it. In fact, teenagers even adults do this phenomenon. They are more spirited than children in asking ‘telolet’ and do it again and again. So ‘omteloletom’ phenomenon is not new and logically is not funny.
People think that ‘omteloletom’ phenomenon has possitive effects such as a entertainment, promotion and introducing of bus in Indonesia. Actually, I agree with that statement, but negative effects are more than the possitive effects. According to viva.co.id (2016) that ‘omteloletom’ has many negative effects, such as standing up on the edge of the street, traffic jam, and disturbing others. For examle, they who ask the ‘telolet’ reckless to stand up beside street even on the middle of the street only to ask ‘omteloletom.’ They do not care about negative effect of what they do, they think that they are happy they will do it. Actually, it can cause an accident, according to detik.com (2016) that the phenomenon of ‘omteloletom’ make a crowd of people on the edge of the left and right of the street, and it can cause a serious accident. Futhermore, this phenomenon make a traffic jam because many people try to do the trending phenomenon with going to street. So that, the street is full of the people and make every vehicle can not advance as it should be. Then, this phenomenon disturbs others around. For example, when passengers is enjoying the way, but sound of ‘telolet’ always ring during on the way. Surely, I think it really disturbs becuase the sound too noise. Be side it, drivers around the bus are also disturbed by the klaxon because the klaxon often ring. So, it disturbs the concentration of the drivers around. Therefore, this phenomenon has many negative effects than possitive effects based on reasons above.
Be side that, people assume that ‘omteloletom’ is very famous in the world and make Indonesia proud. In fact, at what the part where it is called property. Actually Indonesia was very famous about it, but it is not achievement, creation or something like that. It is just a joke, even it is not suitable to call joke. Joke is something can make people laugh, but where it can make a laugh. The phenomenon is only joke of children and it is not suitable to do for teenagers and adults. So, I think there is no property of this phenomenon or ‘omteloletom.’ Even this phenomenon can be ragarded as a character assassination based on reason above.
People in Indonesia is glad because ‘omteloletom’ in social media become world trending topic in many times and many famous people in the world use hashtag ‘omteloletom.’ Surely, people in Indonesia become glad about it because it come from Indonesia, but I think precisely make Indonesia shame becuase people of other coutries think that only hearing the klaxon Indonesian people can laugh and scream. They think that it makes no sense for them and assumed that Indonesian people like ancient people and something like that for them. Except it, in social media increaseas the number of spamming based on bbc.com (2016). For example, on instagram in Indonesia many spammers post ‘omteloletom’ on every comment even in unrelated topic. Even the spammers attack the famous people in the world with comment ‘omteloletom.’ Surely, it is very disturbed and make annoyed. In serious case, the spammers attack Jokowi as president of Indonesia on his posting, whereas the posting is very far related with ‘omteloletom,’ even Donald Trump as president of United States is also attacked of spammers about ‘omteloletom.’ Surely, this is really something make Indonesia shame, because everyone in the world assumed that the spammers come from Indonesia. So that, this phenomenon ‘omteloletom’ can not be regarded making people in Indonesia glad, quite the contrary.
In conclusion, the phenomenon of ‘omteloletom’ should not be overstated based on above, because it has many negative effect than possitive effects. According to detik.com (2016) that goverment and police are happy if they (people who hunt ‘omteloletom’) express, but it should be reminded to be more careful and should not be any victims of this phenomenon. In other words, they remind to not overstated in facing this phenomenon. So, I think this phenomenon give us nice experiences and hope we can learn possitive things from events above.

eutanasia in indonesia

Eutanasia is a term from greece whiches means death, this term usually used for practices in medicine, it is the practice of intentionally ending a life in order to relieve pain and suffering according to wikipedia “There are different euthanasia laws in each country. The British House of Lords Select Committee on Medical Ethics defines euthanasia as "a deliberate intervention undertaken with the express intention of ending a life, to relieve intractable suffering". In the Netherlands and Flanders, euthanasia is understood as "termination of life by a doctor at the request of a patient". In some countries there is a divisive public controversy over the moral, ethical, and legal issues of euthanasia. Those who are against euthanasia may argue for the sanctity of life, while proponents of euthanasia rights emphasize alleviating suffering, and preserving bodily integrity, self-determination, and personal autonomy. Jurisdictions where euthanasia is legal include the Netherlands, Canada, Colombia, Belgium, and Luxembourg
How if it is happend in our country?, according to asianews There is woman, who suffered a permanent stroke and is on a life-support machine, was reacting to external stimuli, this according to the physicians treating her. Her husband claims instead that she has slipped into a coma. Her husband Hasan asked that his wife be euthanised because he cannot afford the medical costs which are now running at about one million rupiahs (about US$ 100) per day. "I already owe 60 million rupiahs (US$ 6,000)," Hasan said. "If the government can no longer guarantee her right to live, then it is better to reduce her suffering," he added, and in my opinian i totally disegree with eutanasia in indonesia because as you can see there is no humanity  if eutanasia exist in our country
In my opinion it's not moral to kill a person even if they are terminally ill because this person need a chance to live along and see his life, but there are people that disagree. Some opinion said “Terminally ill patients, or those in a permanent vegetative state, can take up valuable hospital beds for those who do want to get better. If they do not want to live, then they should not be allowed to take the beds and care of those that do.” Just because beds in hospitals are needed by others is no reason to allow a person to die! Some can be cared for at home, or in special hospices. If we stopped caring for the terminally ill at all where would we draw the line? Is treating the elderly also a waste of resources because they are nearing the end of their lives anyway? I think that to describe palliative care as a "huge and ultimately wasteful drain on medical resources"  I’m not sure that families of the terminally ill would agree with that. Thats why i disagree with that.
Patients are vulnerable and fearful about the potential pain and deterioration ahead. Their judgement may be impaired. Once their symptoms are relieved and holistic hospice care takes over, they come to value whatever life is left to them. As we know, patients who has pain and suffering cannot think clearly they only choose how to stop the pain and if we give eutanasia as a option it is a big mistake because its means we gave blade to person who in underpressur , and Voluntary euthanasia gives power which can be too easily abused. Doctors need the law to restrain the temptation to speed up dying for the terminally ill patients, and in my opinion it can be make doctors not working well as a doctor and eutanasia can be abused if it is became option in our country and still i disagree about that.

Human beings have not the right to decide when and how to die. If every human beings have the right to decide when and how to die it means that every single person have the right to suicide, it is cruel, at least i totally disagree with it, with all perspectives in our country including religion, custom, norm, etc whiches mainly contradictive with eutanasia, let the doctors work hard and choose the best medicine and decision without euthanasia option, its made our doctor in our country more increase their quality without easy to give up and doing eutanasia
