Ways to Save Children and Teens from the Negative Side of Internet

Nowadays, internet becomes the largest and very wide global network in the world. Furthermore, every computer is connected each other from one country to other countries over the world. It contains various kinds of dynamic and interactive information: video, text, picture, text, etc. Further, internet expansion is very useful in many aspects. As we know, if it is used properly, it will give positive impacts. Someone can get information that he wants easily. However, the positive things from the internet can be provide bad impacts when it is used irresponsibility. The addiction of internet usage for children and teens makes them endure for a long period of time in front of computer, hand phone, laptop, etc. therefore, they will forget about their important obligation in their daily routines, such as bathing, eating, studying, etc.  One of the reasons that make them very mad of internet is because they get a new experience and they can get any comfort. Conversely, they can get something else in cyberspace which is could not exist in the real world. Moreover, consciously or unconsciously it will bring several bad impacts for children and teenager. For instances, it makes them become antisocial, creates deception, kidnapping, cyber-crime, etc. Therefore, we must prevent all the negative side and avoid all of those impacts. One of the best ways to hold it is with a persuasive approach—by increasing parents’ communication to their children and parents role as controller.

Generally, cyber policy always worthless as those as we could find many people whether children, teenagers, or adults who like to hack many sites that have blocked in the internet. We could not depend on it. As we know, mostly children do not understand or often ignore the policy or the regulation of the internet that is made by government.it because they are in infancy phase. Whereas, in this phase they have dependence behavior toward their parents that face to independency which is include interests of curiosity on something new and big. In this age, children and teen are still unstable to think well and to consider something that still influenced by emotion and logical mindset.  Therefore, they do what they want to do without aware whether it has positive side or negative side. For that reason, we must emphasize to the parents action toward their children by doing communication to each other. in the sense (Bahri, 2004) said that communication in family can be  going through reciprocally and alternated, it can be from parents to child, child to parents, or from child to child. In communication, parents have responsibility to educate their children. Then, communication in family is worth of education. There are several norms that have been inherited from the parents to the children, such as religious, morality, social, ethic, etc. In this case, parents can use democratize communication. It means, there is an open minded between parents and their child. They make kind of rules that are agreed by each other. Directly, parents try to appreciate the child’s ability (Yusuf, 2001). Further, parents must communicate the bad impacts of internet abuse toward their children and give appropriate explanation. Therefore, they can understand and accept the information of the internet usage correctly. Good, effective communication is expected to solve the wrong attitude of the children including internet abuse among children and teens. Besides, those activities will give effect to the character formation that can filter out the impact internet technology so that they do not fall into the addiction that will make their positive character becomes degenerative.

Generally, the main factor that cause adolescents delinquency is there is no attention and outpouring of parents’ affection. Child is often given much money excessively as the substitute of parents’ responsibility and attention.  In the same manner, parents give dispensation and great permissiveness toward the child. this thing causes many of children and teens are wasting their time a long with their gadget to browsing or associating with friend who sports or gives any attention to them (Kuntaraf, 1999). Due to the lack of parents negligence and responsibility, there is a case of suicide by a girl aged 13 years—Megan Meier. She was bullied by a friend named Sarah Drew through myspace and ADL website (Steinhauer, November 20, 2008). That is why, parents roles are really needed to monitor the usage of internet. Because of that, parent is recommended to accompany them while they are accessing on internet to avoid the internet abuse. Besides, we can to settle down the computer in place which easily to be seen. Therefore, parents can easily monitor them broadly for they often access dangerous sites secretly. We can teach them to make the right decision by their own self when parent is outside or there appears a porno sites. Also, parents must restrict the internet usage for the children and teens. Stated for how long internet can be used and what site that can be accessed. Install software or web protection that block pornography site.

On the rate side, people prefer to the government policy, cyber policy, the regulations, or related to the industrial organization who tackle and prevent the negative site in social media. They believe that those ways are easier to do and worth well. In an outline, it works well which means they can overcome some cyber-crimes like as kidnapping, deception, etc. Nonetheless, without any intervention of parents the policy cannot reach the fundamental point that is the root of the problem in small-term. The policy cannot touch children and teens individually. They cannot monitor the activity and curiosity of children and teens when they are using internet because they only controlling in general form. After all, children and teens always find many ways to be able to open the sites which have been blocked. For that reason, parents are truly as the main controller over the children and teens’ habits on using the internet. As a result parents must be restrict and prevent children and teens to do not excessive with computer usage by providing some controls firmly over the children and teens. It means giving them time limitation on using internet. This can avoid children and teens to watch or upgrade everything that is related pornography supervision.

In conclusion, we cannot say no to technology especially for internet. If we do so, then we will miss a lot of information. Anyhow, the use of internet by children should always be monitored so as not to cause some impacts that could harm them. Even though, government has used some ways strategically to solve internet abuse toward children and teens—monitoring from the nation institute or states any regulation to overcome it. Nonetheless, we need another way that worth well than others. Meanwhile, by implementing a persuasive approach that is emphasized to the parents’ communication and parents as a controller, likewise accompanying their children and teens when they are accessing internet and give them limitation in using it is worth well to avoid them from internet abuse. It is better that the rule of government or related institution because it solves to the root directly. Conjointly, parents can build their positive behaviors early to prevent from the internet abuse that related to pornography, violence, cyber-crime, etc. moreover, we must consider our need of technology, realize the merits of the technology and still use ethics. Therefore, we are not addicted by the internet.
