Ranking System in Education Phenomenon
A ranking system
in a class has been a crucial issue in a educational field in Indonesia.
Ranking system usually given in the end of the lesson in a semester as a report
of what have students achieved. Therefore, as for the various circles, starting
from the school, society and even the student it selves have their own point of
view to this issue. They argue about giving ranking system in a class is needed
or it will give the bad impacts among students. There are still some schools do
not to use ranking system. Meanwhile, ranking system should be in line to
learning objectives. Essentially, the learning objectives is mastering of
science, materials and skills. It could be measured from the report of how far
the students mastering all the components of learning. Ideally, to see their
progress, this is how ranking system could be important to them. For more
emphasis to this side and to make it clear to be accepted, there are two
important things that can be highlights for some reasons. First, ranking system in a class bring
motivations atmosphere among schoolmates. Second, ranking system will help
increasing their progress in learning.
Unwittingly, ranking system has
become an important factor in students’ achievement, especially in bringing
motivation to the students to be actively involved in the learning process. For
instance, the most common effect that can be seen that they see their friend
get better score in the end of the lesson, and they will get motivated to
enrich their selves among them. Moreover, they will get motivation to be more
diligently study to achieve high ranking in the class. Also, it can be a way to
fulfill some needs or to satisfy some factors. In some cases, parents of the
student want their children to be a person in the future; they want their
children could be achieving what they want and success in their lives. The parents
always ask them to study to get high ranking and it could be a way to get what
they wish for in the future. They are able to dream what they want to be by
making it as motivation for them, just like what Ronald (2015) writes about three ways to build motivation
for students, one of them is having a dream. The students who have a dream will
be motivated to study and it will be a stimulus for what should they do. The
ranking create a dream to the students who has lack of motivation.
Besides the students get motivated
in the learning, it also helps them to increase progress of their learning. A
real form of the result that can be seen in ranking system in a class is
students are able to see their progress of their own learning, how far they
involve and understand in the lesson activities. Certainly, from what they see
and get in the end of period of the lesson, they will encourage their progress
and maximize their ability to achieve what they have given in the learning
process. As Sarah Wilson says about ranking system “removing rank is not
helping anything. The stress and the competition continues to exist and
colleges continue to find ways to judge their applicants based only on the
numbers” (2011). In order to do the ranking system, the school principles
should be corresponding to the ideas that ranking system is given based on the
criteria of evaluating and reporting procedures. Furthermore, there are four
steps that can be doing to give the ranking based on Suharsimi Arikunto on his
book about Dasar-dasar Evaluasi
Pendidikan (2009), first is simple ranking, second is ranking percentages,
third is deviation standard and using z-score. Those steps are important, if
they want to use ranking system in a class. The reason is people seem unaware
of how to make the ranking system accurately and usually consider as a useless
idea to be implemented because they see as psychological disorder to the
students.
In all consciences, those are
positives thought that can be found in giving ranking system in a class. While
it is true, still many people do not agree, because there are some negative
impacts that they see toward the issue. In addition, they believe there will be
conflict socials among classmates. For example, if there are immature students
who believe anything happens derived from others or because they cannot accept
that they get low ranking, they become jealous and even hate students who get
top of the ranking. Furthermore, people also believe that ranking system
creates label for the students, they tend to give the label to the students who
get high ranking as a clever. As a result, it will make them become haughty and
overconfidence. Otherwise, the students who get low ranking will be low self
child. In contrast, what people think of ranking system brings negative sides,
we need to acknowledge the importance of ranking system in education, moreover,
in Indonesia where the system that is used in recruitment of students in
college is using ranking as one of the requirement. In EPI (Education Partnerships, INC)’s
article provide advantages of ranking systems, one of them is “College
admission officers have an easier time determine who should be accepted and to
whom and how much scholarship monies should be awarded”(2010). Initially, there
are some ways to enter the college, as one of them is ranking. The students
need to collect the date based on the ranking to be an accomplishment that they
can show off.
In short, ranking system is one of
the most crucial issues among education actors. It cannot be denied it brings
up several of ideas, pro and contra toward the issue. Yet, ranking system
provides some positive effects for the students, as parts of them are ranking
system bring motivation atmosphere around classmates, as they see their friend
who get high ranking and outside class factors that encourage them to get what
they want in the future or a dream to be achieved. Then, ranking system also
help the students to increase their learning progress, as they see their result
in the end and it can be compared of previous result that they get to be
enhanced in the later stages. In addition, the ranking system also can be an
important thing for requirement of college system.
