Unity in Diversity

Indonesia is one of maritime countries in this world. Maritime is the country or island states which has many diversity in ethnic, culture, and religion. Thus, Indonesia often has many complicated conflicts. From the edge of the east to the west, we often will find and hear sad scream, tears, and even the drop of blood. The sign of  ‘Bhineka Tunggal Ika’  which can be found on Garuda’s feet (logo of Indonesia) looks like haven’t been implemented by all of Indonesians. The sense of unity in diversity is the main thing that should be owned by every citizen as a form of respect to our country. Here are four examples of conflicts that caused by the issues of SARA (ethnic, custom, racial, religion):
·         Crisis of Aceh with the Free Aceh Movement (GAM)
·         Crisis of Polo in Central Sulawesi
·         Incident of Dayak-Madura at Central Borneo
·         Bomb incident at Bali

Behind the ethnic conflict in Indonesia that could break the unity of Indonesian nation, if we examine deeply that there are axis that make a tribe or religion are mutually shows the selfish and ego, shows a sense ‘us’ and ‘them’. Every group consider the ones who do not stand with them as the enemy. Every conflict that led SARA in Indonesia begins from individual conflicts which then leads to collective behalf of ethnic conflict. The conflict that occured a few years ago in Poso, if we explrore in depth the dispute began when a different youth religion being drunk but then the sentiment of of some people and manipulated of provocation in the name of ethnic and religion.
Poso conflict heated up when the provocation was about burning of mosque by the Christian people. Indeed, religious is the most vulnerable issue of a conflict. It seems that the socio-economic gap that the majority of migrants dominate sectors of the economy makes the conflict becomes more heated.
Alternatives in uniting the ethnic in Indonesia by holding accommodations is the right solution to establish this great nation. K.H Abdurrahmad Wahid, well know as Gus Dur (3rd Prsesident of the Republic of Indonesia) disclose “A nation which able to tolerate the differences of culture, religion, and ideology is a great nation”. Ethnic and religious conflicts in Indonesia should be completed soon and there should be a concrete solution. wirawan premises in his book entitled “Conflict, Theory, Application, and Research” explains how to resolve an inter-ethnic and religious conflicts that occur in a country.
First , through the intervention of third parties, where the decision of third-party intervention will be final and binding, for example is court. Second, by mediation. Mediation is a way of conflict resolution through a third party also called mediators. Third, “rekosialisasi”, the process of conflict resolution by means of transformation before the conflict that is going on, where people at the time lived in a peace. As another way to resolve ethnic or religious conflict: the conflict must be in management towards reconciliation, amend the system of religious understanding, reduce the appearance of frivolous in religious life, and damping appetite to avoid ethnic and religious conflicts. Conflict is not something expected by everyone to live in peace in this world. Moreover, the conflict of religious affiliations. To muffle the face of the danger of the conflict, the conflict must be managemented in order to proceed in a positive direction.
Dr. Judo Poerwowidagwo, MA, senior lecturer at the University of Yogyakarta Duta Wacana stated that the conflict which toward positive direction as follows: from the condition Fight strived to Flight. Flight of the conditions sought again in order to create conditions Flaw. Flaw of this new Agreement is directed toward conditions, continue to Reconciliation. Therefore, people, especially religious and ethnic leaders must be equipped with at Conflict Management knowlege at least the basic knowledge.
Religious conflict does not happen because their religion taught to make the conflict but because of the way people understand the religion that causes them motivated to do the conflict itself. Majesty of religion knowledge of their respective religions should not be disclosed by way of exaggeration. Excessive expression in the teaching of religion to each members of a religious community will cause people to feel themselves more superior than another religions. Lift to diverse life to show the universal values of the knowledge of their religion. For example, all religions teach each members to live patiently in facing the process of this life, willing to sacrifice for the sake of a noble. Successful people like rich, smart, being the master, has the power, feel themselves nobles, all of it can cause people to become unconscious if he/she is careless. Things like that are supposed to be more important to our nation in these days. Calebration ofreligious activities such as religious festivals, people should reduce the appearance forms of celebration with glamorous. It is also very easy to invite the occurrence of a conflict because other people's existence also goaded to show him that he/she is also a religion which was superb and greatest.
Every human being has a passion or life force within themselves. One that lust is lust of distinction. This distinction lust pushes someone to be more than the others. If lust is managed properly it will lead to healthy and good competition. A healthy competition is a competition in accordance with religious norms, the rule of law and other humanitarian norms. However, this distinction lust often makes people blind to the imperfections. This is what makes many people assume the character exclusive and arrogant. A conflict happened by differences of custom, religion, or ethnicity will lead to the negative side, among others:
- Situation in the work becomes uncomfortable.
- There will be split of ethnic, religion, or gorup of society
- Apathetic, demotivation, stress, and frustated for the one who get into conflict
- Causing a new conflict
- There will be physical action such as fight, attack, detroyer.
The diversity of ethnicity, religion, and group make Indonesia as a nation prone to conflict.  If the ethnic conflict that occurs continuously in a state, then the country can be said not able to create peace and security in the country. Therefore the problem of ethnic conflict needs to be resolved quickly by the government. Because in addition to countries experiencing a loss, people around the conflict regions will experience a loss anyway.
In terms of religion and belief, Islam is the majority religion in Indonesia this beloved country, while other religions are Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, and Buddhist faiths coupled with officially recognized by the government. The goal of all religions is only for the good. In the words of the Prophet Muhammad “Only human person who is more concerned with world who frequently abuse religion for certain things. How peaceful it is, if the religious leaders and each ouf our beliefs provide the peace to people as an example of pastors in the United States and the King of Jordan As-Sayyid Al-Hasyimi Abdul'llah II. God created everything in balance. As an example there is darkness and also there is light, there is no daylight at night, there is good there is bad and there are pros there are cons equally. Then we were also created by God with the mind and heart so actually we should be wise and can accept the differences that exist. Since the problem of inter-ethnic or religious conflict could have been resolved, the country and its people will live in peace and secure. Assume that we are each other relatives.. God made everything beautiful in its perfect time.
